What is APM Aurdupilot?

APM is an open source flight controller having a lot of features and flight modes. To make a multi-rotor/Quadcopter autonomous APM-Ardupilot flight controller is used. APM is used with a software named Mission Planner. Through this software e can achieve various flight modes. Let us discuss them one by one.

6 of the 14 Flight Modes are given below:

  • Auto Mode: In the auto mode there is a predefined path plotted with the help of GPS, and the path is plotted by the waypoints.The multi-rotor/Quadcopter have to follow that particular path only. Before the mission is started the throttle of the controller should be down, and then pilot switch the mode to auto mode, after this only throttle should move. And after completing all the waypoints there should also be a Land point, upon which the copter will land, otherwise the pilot have to let copter down with the help of transmitter.
  • Follow Me Mode: In this mode the multi-rotor/Quadcopter will follow the path upon which you are travelling i.e. copter will follow you. For this you must have a Droid Planner software in your Android mobile phones or Mission planner in your laptops. With the help of telemetry connectivity your copter is able to follow you.
  • Loiter Mode: This is the most stable mode, in this it keeps the copter held to a particular position with that particular altitude.
  • Altitude Hold Mode: In the altitude hold mode, a particular value is set for the altitude and whereas other motions like Yaw, Pitch, Roll are normal.
  • Guided Mode: In this mode you need a telemetry connectivity between your copter and Mobile phone or laptop. Like with mobile phone you can set way point anywhere through GPS in the droid planner and your copter will go to that plotted point. After reaching at that point it hovers and wait for the next point.
  • Drift Mode: In the drift mode, the pilot is having full control over Yaw and pitch, but roll motion is automatically controlled by APM.
